M&M's are "colorful button-shaped chocolates" produced by Mars, Incorporated and similar to and inspired by Smarties. The candy shell, each of which has the letter "m" printed in lower case on one side, surrounds a filling which varies depending on the variety of M&M's. The original candy had a milk chocolate filling which, upon introducing other varieties, was branded as the "plain" variety. "Peanut" M&M's, which feature a peanut coated in milk chocolate and, finally, a candy shell, were the first variety introduced and remain a regular variety. Numerous other varieties have been introduced, some of which are regular widespread varieties (such as "peanut butter", "pretzel", "crispy", and "dark chocolate"), while others are limited in duration or geographic availability. M&M's originated in the United States in 1941, and are now sold in as many as 100 countries. They are produced in different colors, some of which have changed over the years. The candy-coated chocolate concept was inspired by a method used to allow soldiers to carry chocolate without having it melt. The company's longest-lasting slogan reflects this: "Melts in your mouth, not in your hand."

In 1990, M&M's exhibited at New York's Erie County Fair a life-size fiberglass cow covered with 66,000 M&M candies—each adhered by hand with the "m" logo on each candy facing outward. According to a website run by the cow's designer, Michael Adams, the stunt earned M&M Mars $1 million in free publicity because it was reported on by Newsweek magazine, as well as the New York Post, UPI and WABC-TV, and Live with Regis.

In 1995 the company ran the M&M's Color Campaign, a contest in which participants were given the choice of selecting purple, blue, or pink as the color of a new variety of M&M's. The announcement of the winning color (blue) was carried on most of the television network's news programs as well as the talk shows of David Letterman and Jay Leno. As part of the contest results, the company had the Empire State Building lighted in blue. Although the financial details of these deals were not disclosed and neither was the campaign's effect on sales, one marketing book estimated that the company "collected millions" in free publicity and that the campaign "certainly" resulted in an increasing of the brand's awareness. In 1998, M&M's were styled as "The Official Candy of the New Millennium," as MM is the Roman numeral for 2000. This date was also the release of the rainbow M&M's which are multi-coloured and filled with a variety of different fillings.

In 2000, "Plain" M&M's (a name created in 1954 when "Peanut" M&M's were introduced) were renamed "Milk Chocolate" M&M's, and pictures of the candy pieces were added to the traditional brown and white packaging. The new millennium also brought about new M&M's video games as well. "M&M's: The Lost Formulas" was released on September 28, 2000, and "M&M's: Mini Madness" was also released on December 14, 2000.

It started since the end of World War II. Artists experimented so freely with so many media, such different styles and such a wealth of content. There were no settled ways and no fixed approach. Wave of immigrant artist who escaped the Nazis had settled largely in New York. Due to this, the center of the art world shifted to New York. Abstract Expressionism, it is spontaneous execution, large gestural brushstrokes, abstract imagery and field of intense color. It is a post World War II Art Movement in American painting, developed in New York in the 1940s. It was the first specifically American movement to achieve international influence and put New York City at the cener of the western art world, a role formerly filled by Paris. Although the term "abstract expressionism" was first applied to American art in 1946 by the art critic Robert Coates, it had been first used in Germany in 1919 in the magazine Der Sturm, regarding German Expressionism. In the United States, Alfred Barr was the first to use this term in 1929 in relation to works by Wassily Kandinsky. Figurative painting, sometimes written as Figurativism, particularly paintings and sculptures. Figurative art is often defined to contrast abstract art. The formal elements, those aesthetic effects created by design, upon which figurative art is dependent, include line, shape, color, light, and dark, mass, volume, texture, and perspective.

Pop Art, “Pop” means from an English critic Lawrence Alloway refers to the universal images of “popular culture”. Pop Art renders the commonplace, the boring. It does show the “personal signature” of the artist. Hyperrealism, the rendering of subjects with sharp, photographic precision, if firmly rooted in the long, realistic tradition in the arts. The decade of the 1970s witnessed a strong presence of realism in the visual art and subjective abstract tendencies that had gripped American painting since World War II. Toward the end of that decade in 1978 New York’s Whitney museum of American art mounted and controversial, though significant exhibition called “new image painting”. Neo-expressionism, the center of the art world moved to New York in the 1940s for historical as well as artistic reasons. The first generation Abstract Expressionists developed a style that was viewed worldwide as highly original and influential. They laid claim to the tenet that the process of painting was a viable alternative to subject matter. These young German and Italian artists, who came to be called Neo-Expressionists, detested painting “about nothing”. This artist would mature to portray the bitter ironies and angst of their generation in emotionally fraught images that are rooted in history, literature, and expressionistic art.

Feminist art, it started from the feminist art movement of the 1970’s, is made using traditional art forms, like paintings and non- traditional media like conceptual art, body art, performance art, video and film. It could also aspects of different movements or media such as merging of text and photo. It is an art of practice not born from classical art but it is open to the freedom to experiment and representing a shift to postmodernism from modernism when art made by women was put in an "other" or different class than works made by men. Until the movement, it was often difficult for women to have their work represented by galleries and included in exhibitions. Ephemeral art, from the Greek word, “ephemeros”, literally "lasting only one day" or temporary. It may be constructed for the duration of an exhibition. Typically the term is used to describe objects found in nature, although it can describe a wide range of things. Video art is a type of art which relies on moving pictures and comprises video and/or audio data. Video art came into existence during the early 1960s and early 1970s as the new technology became available outside corporate broadcasting and is still practiced and has given rise to the use of video installations. Fine artists have appropriated video as their medium in the creation of works of art. Digital art is an artistic work or practice that uses digital technology as an essential part of the creative or presentation process. Since the 1970s, various names have been used to describe the process including computer art and multimedia art, and digital art is itself placed under the larger umbrella term new media art. The techniques of digital art are used extensively by the mainstream media in advertisements, and by film-makers to producevisual effects. Desktop publishing has had a huge impact on the publishing world, although that is more related to graphic design.

20th century Art

The 20th century opened new vistas and possibilities that expanded everyday human experience and greatly influenced the world of art and original painting. From the earliest years of the turn of the century, artists were beginning to experiment with subject matter, creating realities reflective more of their own inner visions than what lay before them in nature. Concurrent with this was a search for new techniques, materials, and approaches to support these forays into new terrains. As a result, 20th century painting movements and trends inspired artists to set out in many divergent directions, resulting in a broad range of styles and forms. They tended to break with tradition. They preferred to look forward instead of backward and experiment with new artistic choices rather than relying on old methods. Art in the 20th century was all about progress. Artists wanted to contribute to the development of their viewers and their society.Artists explored new ways of creating and distributing their works with important roles such as Science and Technology. They highly valued free expression. They refused to conform to standard practices and instead painted what they thought, felt, and envisioned, even if no one else appreciated or understood it.The subject matter was less important than the way that subject matter was communicated to the viewer.

Fauvism, whose name derives from the French word for "wild beast," was a Primitivist movement centered in Paris in the first decade of the 20th century. Fauvism was a logical successor to the painting of van Gogh and Gauguin. They chose their color and brushwork on the basis of their emotive qualities. Despite the aggressiveness of their method, however, their subject matter centered on traditional nudes, still lifes, and landscapes. Expressionism is the distortion of nature as opposed to the imitation of nature in order to achieve a desired emotional effect or representation of inner feelings. Cubism was a highly influential visual arts style of the 20th century the Cubist style emphasized the flat, two-dimensional surface of the picture plane, rejecting the traditional techniques of perspective, foreshortening, modeling, and chiaroscuro and refuting time-honoured theories of art as the imitation of nature. Typical cubist paintings frequently show letters, musical instruments, bottles, pitchers, glasses, newspapers, still lifes, and the human face and figure. Analytical Cubism, color schemes were simplified, tending to be nearly monochromatic (hues of tan, brown, gray, cream, green, or blue preferred) in order not to distract the viewer from the artist's primary interest--the structure of form itself. Synthetic Cubism, works of this phase emphasize the combination, or synthesis, of forms in the picture. Color is extremely important in the pieces' shapes because they become larger and more decorative. Futurism, Italian Futurismo, Russian Futurism, early 20th-century artistic movement centred in Italy that emphasized the dynamism, speed, energy, and power of the machine and the vitality, change, and restlessness of modern life.

Modern Art

Modern art, artist of the mid-15th century looked upon their art as modern. They chose new subjects, materials, techniques that signaled a radical change from a medieval past.
This era has a many styles of their art. Neoclassicism in art refers to the predominant Western movement that originated in Rome in the 18th century; it is characterized mainly as a reaction against the excessive grandiose of the Baroque era and the ornateness of the late Rococo school. Romanticism is an artistic style and movement in the 18th and 19th centuries that spread across Europe and later to the United States. Realism in the arts refers to the mid-19th century Realist movement which started in France and initially began as a reaction against Romanticism in which subjects were treated idealistically, the Realists tended to discard theatrical drama and classical forms of art to depict commonplace or realistic themes, they wanted to represent the subject matter truthfully, without artificiality and avoiding artistic conventions, implausible, exotic and supernatural elements. Impressionism is an artistic movement and style originating in France in the 19th century with a group of Paris-based artists. It is characterized by a concern with depicting the visual impression of the moment, especially in terms of the shifting effect of light and color.

Pictorialism is the name given to an international style and aesthetic movement that dominated photography during the 19th and 20th centuries. Pictorialism refers to a style in which the photographer has somehow manipulated what would otherwise be a straightforward photograph as a means of creating an image rather than simply recording it. Typically, a pictorial photograph appears to lack a sharp focus, is printed in one or more colors other than black-and-white (ranging from warm brown to deep blue), and may have other manipulation of the surface. For the Pictorialist, a photograph, like a painting, drawing or engraving, was a way of projecting an emotional intent into the viewers realm of imagination. Pure Photography or Straight Photography refers to the term that emerged in the 1880's to mean simply an unmanipulated photographic print, in opposition to the soft focus painterly images of the Pictorialist photographers. Pure/Straight photographers attempted to depict a scene as realistically and objectively as permitted by the medium, renouncing the use of manipulation. This emphasis on the unmanipulated silver print dominated modernist photographic aesthetics into the 1970's. It is also a type of picture that has a side effect but tells the truth in general. Post-Impressionism refers to the artistic movement that emerged in France in the late 19th century to the early 20th century. The movement represented both an extension of Impressionism and a rejection of that style’s inherent limitations. Though most of them began as Impressionists, each of them abandoned the style; however, to form his/her own highly personal art.

Expressionism is a style and movement which first surfaced in art in the early 20th century. It refers to the style that attempts to depict not the objective reality but rather the subjective emotions and responses that objects and events arouse in the artist. Expressionism is one of the main currents of art in the 20th century, and its qualities of highly subjective, personal, and spontaneous self-expression are typical of a wide range of modern artists and art movements. Art Nouveau is an artistic style and movement prominent in western Europe and the US from about 1890 until the World War I. It is considered as a total art style embracing architecture, graphic art, interior design, and most of the decorative arts including jewelry, furniture, textile, household silver and other utensils and lighting, as well as fine arts. It is characterized by intricate linear designs and flowing curves based on natural forms, and is also considered as a reaction against the French academic art of the 19th century. English uses the French term Art Nouveau, which translates to New Art, but the international style has many different names in other countries, such as: Jugendstil (Deutsche) and Modernista (Spanish). Their subject matters are usually organic imagery (leaves, stems, flowers, etc., but also such things as waves, fire, and flowing hair of women) to non-objective design. Sometimes, particularly within the organic approach, there is an erotic undertone.

Art Beyond the West

Art Beyond the West is divided into seven arts, African Art, Oceanic Art, Native American, Islamic Art, Indian Art, Chinese Art and Japanese Art. Their styles are symbolism, naturalism, realism and abstractionism. And they used many mediums in this period like wood, terracota, beads, silver, brass, gold, bronze and many more. In African Art they are more on rock paintings and engravings. They make sculptures to symbolize their Gods. They have the sculpture of the "Altar of the Hand and Arm" this figure has a triangular apex, in the middle you will see the king his head is big it symbolizes intelligence and power. They have the sculpture of "The ruler of Orrangun-Ila" he has a very high crown and it symbolizes as the center of power. And they also have the "Nkisi Nkondi" it is known as nail figures. It is a hunter figure this was used to protect their village, to heal the sick and to end disaster. "Nkisi" means refers to the spritual charm and "Nkondi" refers to the carved power. For Oceanic art they are divided into three cultures Polynesia, Melanesia and Micronesia. Polynesia are known for massiveness and compactness. Melanesia are wood carvings and ritual masks, the best studied of Melanesian artifacts, are brillantly colored. Each object was designed to serve a ritual purpose.

Native Art of the Americas, it was rich and varied before the arrival of Europian culture. Islamic Art is a modern concept, created by art historians in the nineteenth century to categorize and study the material first produced under the Islamic peoples that emerged from Arabia in the seventh century. Chinese art confucianism ascended as the major Chinese way of life during the second century BCE. It is based on the Moral principles of Confucius, which argue that social behavior must be derived from sympathy for one’s fellows. Japanese art, Japan’s sculpture tradition has focused on clay modeling and bronze casting, and its structures have been built from wood. The Japanese tradition, like the Western tradition, has various periods and styles. In Japanese art, as in Western art, we find a developing technology, the effect of native materials, indigenous and foreign influences, a mix of religious traditions, and disagreement as to what art is intended to portray. Despite its vast differences from Western art, Japanese art shows similar meanings and functions. Japanese artists also use the same elements of art, in their own fashion, to shape brilliant compositions.
